Confessions of an Aspiring Beauty Editor

I woke up early this morning and had an epiphany that has been haunting me for quite some time now. At my job, Malie, from time to time magazine editors walk in to write reviews on the store and beauty products. I watch them in awe and think "I want to do that." Ever since I got back from my trip, the question "What if I wrote for a popular magazine?" pops into my head everyday.

I have such a strong passion for writing. I love to write poetry, update my beauty blog frequently, read, attend open mic events, and surround myself with positive words to inspire me. I don't even get paid to do it, but I do it for fun and because I love it so much. Writing is my artistic outlet where I produce literature to "touch, save, and inspire others."

These days when I work, I work not only to use my money for food and necessities to survive on the island. But also to save up to travel, try new activities/restaurants/products, and go to events just to write about my experiences in this blog to share with my audience. I believe that writing is pure pleasure of experiencing life.

My major right now is psychology, my close friends and family always knew me as the social girl. And even I can picture myself becoming a counselor. I love meeting new people, listening, analyzing, giving advice, and my personal thoughts. But with writing, I can do this all as well. I write so much that I realized I want to turn this into a life long career and life style. I refuse to waste anymore time being in denial, due to being afraid of what some of my family members will think.

So instead of wishing and being passive, this week I am going to make an appointment with my counselor to discuss switching my major to journalism. I haven't started the major classes for psychology yet, so now is the perfect time for the transition. I am currently attending a journalism class, working with the University of Hawaii at Manoa's "On the Go" stall journal for a health column this fall, and work at Malie Organics as assistant manager.

All three of these areas will help me gain knowledge, experience, and gain connection in the beauty industry and social media. My goal is to become a beauty editor for a World known magazine.

Life is too short, to be in denial! Taking action to make it happen,
Deanna
